[12 Days of Christmas]

12 Days of Christmas

Number of gifts keeps getting bigger and bigger!

Welcome, wonderers!

This week at the School of Wonders, the elves have been in a musical mood! What’s your favourite Christmas song? One of mine is the song ‘The 12 Days of Christmas’. Do you know it? I set my class a little challenge based on it.

The song tells the story of all the gifts that someone’s ’true love’ gives them over 12 days of Christmas. It’s a sort of ‘list song’ - one of those songs that gets longer and longer with each verse, so the number of gifts keeps getting bigger and bigger!

It starts off like this:

‘On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me:

a partridge in a pear tree.’

So, on Day 1 the person in the song gets 1 present.

[1 gift]

The second verse is:

‘On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me:

2 calling birds

and a partridge in a pear tree.’

So, on Day 2, the person in the song gets 2 new presents plus another partridge in a pear tree

[3 gifts]

2 + 1 = 3 presents on Day 2

The third verse is:

‘On the third day of Christmas, my true love gave to me:

3 French hens,

2 calling birds

and a partridge in a pear tree.’

So, on Day 3, the person in the song gets 3 new presents plus the calling birds and the partridge again:

[6 Gifts]

3 + 2 + 1 = 6 presents on Day 3

By now the gifts are starting to mount up!

[10 Gifts]

1 + 3 + 6 = 10 gifts altogether so far

Can you see a pattern?

The gifts make a pyramid each time. Each new day adds a new layer to the pyramid.

Now, I won’t bore you with the words to the whole song, but I expect you can roughly guess how it continues… By the time we get to the twelfth verse, quite a lot of gifts have been given!

If you want to look the words up, ask an adult and they should be able to find them for you.

So far we have counted the gifts in the first 3 days of the song, but my challenge to you is this:

If your true love gave you gifts for all 12 days,

how many gifts would you have been given altogether?

I will leave you the challenge until next week when I will share the answer. It’s a really interesting number!

Some of the elves in my class found it helpful to draw their own gift pyramids to help them record their working out. You might like to do the same.

Until next week - keep wondering!
