The workshop buzzed with worry. Every elf wanted to help, but no one knew how.
Mrs. Claus looked around the room — at all the anxious faces, the scattered tools, the unfinished toys — and drew a deep breath.
“Alright, everyone,” she said gently. “We can’t stop now. Santa would want us to keep trying.”
Her voice carried calm through the room like a cup of hot cocoa on a cold night.
She spotted a gruff-looking elf in well-worn overalls.
“Toby Elf,” she said, “you’ve been Santa’s Chief Toymaking Elf for years. Before Gizmo invented the Appendapulator, who made all those toys?”
Toby puffed out his chest. “We did, ma’am. Every single one. By hand.”
Mrs. Claus nodded. “Then maybe we can do it again.”
Toby rubbed his chin. “Maybe… but there are a lot more children on the Nice List these days. Let me see…”
He pulled out a pencil and notebook and started scribbling. Numbers, diagrams, even a few doodles of candy canes.
“If we take the total number of nice kids, multiply by the wish factor, divide by the stripes on a candy cane…” he muttered. “Hmm… If we start right now, we’ll finish with ten minutes to spare!”
The elves gasped, then cheered!
“Well then,” shouted one, “let’s take a ten-minute cookie break first!”
Laughter echoed through the workshop as the elves hurried off for peppermint cookies and cocoa.

Mrs. Claus smiled. For the first time all day, hope flickered again.
But when she turned back, she saw Gizmo standing very still, holding a wrench and looking troubled.
“Gizmo?” she asked. “What is it?”
Gizmo sighed. “Even with the elves working by hand… we still have problems.”
What could those new problems be?
