Gizmo Elf was Santa’s Chief Inventor. He had created all kinds of machines that made life at the North Pole easier — but his most famous invention of all was the Appendapulator, the great toy-making machine. Without it, the elves would have to make every toy by hand, and it would take forever to finish all the video games, computers, robots, and remote-control cars children wished for.
Gizmo’s next invention, however, was something even bigger.
Waldo Elf had found out about it. Gizmo made him promise not to tell anyone.
And that is how Santa and Waldo ended up standing in front of Gizmo’s new secret invention.
“Ho ho ho!” Santa laughed in surprise. “It’s a spaceship! Why would Gizmo invent this?”
“He said you would need it to deliver presents to people on the International Space Station,” Waldo explained proudly.
Santa paused.
“Well! That’s actually not a bad idea!”
He stepped toward the hatch.
“This must be where I get in.”
Waldo’s eyes widened with excitement.
“Let’s see the inside! I love seeing the inside of things!”
Before Santa could say anything—Waldo climbed aboard.
“Waldo! Wait!” Santa hurried after him. “We must be careful. We don’t know what any of these switches do.”
“Wow!” Waldo breathed. “It looks exactly like a spaceship!”
“That’s because it is a spaceship,” Santa said kindly. “Now let’s step back outside and—”

Waldo noticed a large button.
It was labeled UP.
“Oh!” Waldo said brightly. “This one must open the top hatch up. That will help us get out!”
Before Santa could finish saying “No—”
Waldo pressed it.
The floor trembled.
The workshop lights flickered.
Somewhere deep in the machinery, something let out a very unfriendly grrrrrrRRRRRRR–CRNK.
Santa grabbed the railing.
“Waldo… what did you just—”
Something groaned.
Something hissed.
Something VERY BIG started to rumble beneath their feet.
What just happened in Gizmo’s workshop?
WHAT was that noise?
Did something EXPLODE?!
Find out tomorrow — only on The North Pole Times!
