Jiller Elf seeks help to find Santa’s position

Gizmo Elf looked worried.

Of course, Gizmo always looked a little worried — but today, he looked extra worried. Extra-extra worried. The kind of worried that makes an elf sigh into a telescope.

Jiller Elf stepped beside him at the workbench.
She had come to help Santa’s Chief Inventor Elf finish the rescue rocket — the one that would bring Santa back home from orbit.

“What’s the matter, Gizmo?” she asked gently. “Is something wrong with the rocket?”

“Oh, no, not at all,” Gizmo said quickly. “The rocket is coming along great. It should be ready to launch right on schedule.”

Jiller raised an eyebrow. “Then why do you look like someone mixed mustard into your cocoa?”

Gizmo sighed again and peered into his telescope.
“We don’t know where Santa Claus is.”

Jiller blinked. “Well… he’s in space, Gizmo. Orbiting Earth.”

“Yes, but where in orbit?” Gizmo tugged a globe toward him and spun it with a dramatic whirr. “This planet is enormous! Santa could be above Toronto… San Diego… Rochester… London… Tokyo!” He threw up his hands. “He could be anywhere. Space is a pretty big place, you know.”

Jiller stared at the spinning globe.
“I see the problem.”

Gizmo nodded sadly. “We have no way to find him.”

But Jiller’s eyes suddenly brightened.

“I think,” she said slowly, “I might have an idea.”

She grabbed her scarf and dashed for the door.

“Where are you going?” Gizmo called after her.

“To see Elvin Elf — the publisher of The North Pole Times!” she shouted. “If Santa’s out there, our newspaper might be able to help!”

The workshop door slammed behind her, leaving Gizmo alone with his telescope, his globe, and his mountain of inventor worries.
